APMBuild Ltd is a Hereford-based building company. Not a national firm with a local landing page — our office, our stores and most of our completed work are inside the county. When we quote a job in Bromyard or Kington, the person pricing it has driven those lanes in February.

Planning in the county runs through Herefordshire Council, a unitary authority. Two local factors shape residential projects here more than anywhere else we work.
The Wye and Lugg phosphate rules. Since 2019, nutrient-neutrality requirements have constrained development in the River Lugg catchment across the north of the county, and the wider Wye catchment carries its own scrutiny. The council operates phosphate credit schemes to unlock schemes that add overnight accommodation. Ordinary extensions and renovations to an existing home are generally outside the net — but new dwellings, annexes and some conversions are firmly inside it, and knowing which side of the line your project sits on belongs at feasibility stage, not month six.
The building stock itself. Sandstone farmhouses, black-and-white timber frames, Victorian brick terraces and a high density of listed buildings, with the south of the county in the Wye Valley National Landscape and the Malvern Hills National Landscape along its eastern edge. Solid-wall buildings need breathable, moisture-aware insulation strategies; get that wrong and you trade a heating bill for a damp problem. It's exactly the kind of detailing our Passive House training exists for.

Our base is in Hereford, and the whole county sits comfortably inside our working radius: Ross-on-Wye and the Wye gorge to the south, Ledbury under the Malverns to the east, Leominster and Kington to the north and west, Bromyard in between, and Hay-on-Wye just over the Welsh border. Beyond the county line the same team covers Worcestershire and Gloucestershire — everywhere within about an hour of Hereford.

Do you build across the whole of Herefordshire?
Yes. APMBuild is based in Hereford and works across the county — Ross-on-Wye, Ledbury, Leominster, Bromyard, Kington and the villages between, plus Hay-on-Wye just over the Welsh border. Most of our completed projects to date are in Herefordshire, so the county is where our references are thickest on the ground.
Can you work on listed buildings and older stone or timber-framed houses?
Herefordshire's housing stock is full of stone, brick and timber-framed buildings, many of them listed or in conservation areas. We build with the moisture behaviour of older solid-wall construction in mind — breathable insulation systems, appropriate mortars and detailing that doesn't trap damp. Listed building consent applications run through your architect or conservation officer; we price and build to the approved details.
How do the River Wye and Lugg phosphate rules affect my project?
Parts of Herefordshire, particularly the Lugg catchment in the north of the county, are subject to nutrient-neutrality requirements that Herefordshire Council applies to planning applications which add overnight accommodation — new dwellings, annexes, some conversions. Typical extensions and renovations to an existing home are generally unaffected, but if your project creates a new dwelling you should expect the phosphate question early in planning. We flag this at feasibility stage so it never surprises you mid-project.
